1- Introduction/ Definition

Contemporary

Through available computing power, communication lines and Web, any single node (such as human, company, country and even a sensor) lives in the same society and same age with other nodes. They are contemporary; living together, potentially working, or competing with each other.


Semantic

Two nodes, x and y, may be related to each other in different ways and different contexts. The meaning or the semantics of their relation is very important in their mutual interaction.

 

Semantic contemporary system

A semantic contemporary system is a set of contemporary nodes which are related to each other based on a set of specific semantic relations.

Semantic Contemporary Systems (SCS) by their nature are:

• Distributed; because they are physically scattered;

• Knowledge-based; because some (human) knowledge is the basis of their semantic relation; and are

• Object oriented; because a set of objects are interacting, to produce collective behavior.

 

SCS Lab

As a part of international program of Shrif University of Technology in Kish Island, SCS Lab is a research laboratory, in the IT department of the School of Science and Engineering.

 

2- Goals / Research lines

The goal of SCS Lab is research and sample development in the areas of semantic contemporary systems, especially in:

• Semantic Web

• Ontology

• Social nets

• Semantic sensor networks

• Semantic grid computing

• Networked embedded systems

• Knowledge management

• Distributed artificial intelligence

• Semantic networks

• Concurrent programming

 

3- Audience

• Students (specially graduates)

• Related problem owners and problem domains

• Scholl of Science and Engineering,
  Sharif University of Technology
  International Branch, Kish Island

 

4- Why this lab is needed?

• Relation with our school. SCS Lab is based on and completely compatible with the objectives of the Communication and Computer Network program of the International Branch of Sharif University

• Colleage match. It matches with research interests of our colleagues

• Student match. It may satisfy those students who are more interested to software work

• Needs. It is completely compatible with the over coming semantic approach to ICT.

• Near model to real life. SCS model is very near to human real life; where a set of nodes, in different level of abstraction, are existing at the same time; in local, national, or international level. Therefore SCS Lab could be a suitable platform for trying to find solution for current problems or to improve current human productivity, in the knowledge age.

• Strategic benefits. In practice human world is not only our usual cites and geography. Human also lives in a set of SCSs. Web, for example is a real human society. To be in the world market, forces us to be active in these new socities. Not only that to use its strategic benefits

• Available problems on SCSs. Any society has its own probles; such as polution. SCS lab could a researh ennironment for new situation.

 

5- Background

There are many works on deferent aspects; such as:

• Semantic Web (W3C)

• Social networks

• Contemporary computing ( http://www.jiit.ac.in/jiit/ic3 )

• Open System Laboratory ( http://osl.cs.uiuc.edu) of Gul lAgha

But I have not seen a collective background on SCS!

 

6- Is it my business?

I think yes; because of my long back ground in:

• Knowledge engineering

• Software engineering, and specially in object model

• Operating systems

• Distributed systems

 

7- Requirements

Requirements are listed below :

• Human power: 

• Graduate as the most basic component (which is my basic request);

• Knowledge supports: to support working students in their research; such as design of experiment, statistical analysis and web-logy.

• To be in the related market:

ο Attend related conferences

ο Subscription of related societies

ο To maintain an active informative site

• Test setup

 ο Simulation tools

ο Test procedures

 • Software setup

• Webware setup

• Physical space

• Hardware setup
